Vatican City

Famous for its spiritual significance and as the storehouse of the world’s greatest art —  Vatican City mints its euros, has its own military, issues passports to its citizens, also contains an anthem and its flag. In 1277, there was a passageway built between the Vatican City and the fortified castle Castel Sant’ Angelo, providing an escape route for the pope in the event the city was attacked. Emperor Constantine started the construction of the Basilica in the 4th Century.

The Vatican City holds many essential masterpieces from the renaissance era — with over 54 galleries on exhibit, the Vatican Museums are among the world’s biggest museums. With a collection of 70,000 art pieces and works, just over 20,000 are on display at the museums. The unique art collections are among the world’s biggest and were assembled by different Popes. The city’s economy comes from donations, the sale of books, postage stamps, books and museum entrance fees.

Facts and Surprising History Facts — Things You May Want to Know

Vatican City was signed by Benito Mussolini

The majority of the 600 citizens of Vatican City reside abroad.

A Roman necropolis stood in pagan times Vatican Hill. When a great fire leveled a lot of Rome at A.D. 64, Emperor Nero, seeking to shift blame from himself, accused the Christians of starting the blaze. He executed them by burning them at the stake, tearing them apart with wild beasts and crucifying them. One of those crucified was St. Peter–disciple of Jesus Christ, pioneer of the Apostles and the first bishop of Rome–that was supposedly buried in a shallow grave on Vatican Hill. By the fourth century and official recognition of their Christian faith in Rome, Emperor Constantine started construction of the first basilica beneath the ancient burial ground with that which was thought to be the tomb of St. Peter in its centre. The current basilica, built starting in the 1500s, sits within a maze of catacombs and St. Peter’s suspected tomb.

For almost 60 years in the 1800s and 1900s, popes refused to leave the Vatican.

Caligula seized the obelisk that stands in St. Peter’s Square.

A circus was built by Roman Emperor Caligula in his mum’s gardens in which charioteers trained and at which Nero is thought to have martyred the Christians. To crown the middle of the amphitheater, Caligula had his forces transport from Egypt a pylon that had stood in Heliopolis. The obelisk, made of one piece of red granite weighing over 350 tons, was erected for an Egyptian pharaoh over 3,000 years back. Back in 1586, it was transferred to its current location in St. Peter’s Square, in which it does double duty as a giant sundial.

The first St. Peter’s Basilica, popes lived mostly at the Lateran Palace across Rome. They left the city entirely after King Philip IV arranged for a cardinal to be elected pope, if the papal court transferred to Avignon, France. Seven popes, all French, ruled from Avignon, and the papacy did not return the Vatican began to be used as a residence along with before 1377, by that time the Lateran Palace had burned to Rome.

The Vatican Observatory possesses a telescope in Arizona. As Rome expanded, light pollution in town made it more hard for astronomers in the Vatican Observatory–situated 15 miles from town in the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo–to see the night sky, therefore in 1981 that the observatory opened another research centre in Tucson, Arizona. Study that is astronomical is conducted by the Vatican .
