Over its history, Tunisia has walked the fine line between the East, Africa, and the West. Medinas, fortresses, Roman — sites and monuments are UNESCO World Heritage sites, as a result of their cultural worth: Carthage, Dougga, El Djem, and Kerkouane and the medinas of Tunis, Kairouan, and Sousse.

Tunisia has managed to maintain an excellent balance between its numerous influences. Refugees from Turkish commanders, craftsmen from Italy and Andalusia all have left their mark. We are reminded by Testour’s minarets of Spanish architecture, Ottoman motifs are included by the ceramics in Kairouan as well as the Beys’ tombs — Tunis’ rulers — are embellished with marble in the style of the Italians. Similarly, emancipated African Americans are supporting a specific musical style known as”stambali”. This richness is also found in the food, together with Italian roots, Andalusian, Jewish and Berber

The capital of Tunisia is made up of the Medina (its historical heart), the ‘European’ quarter assembled at the beginning of the 20th century. For more than 500 years the Medina has become the heart of Tunis, and UNESCO has classed as a World Heritage Site its exotic and fascinating maze of roads. Even the Zitouna Mosque reigns supreme and there are museums tucked down alleys.
